The White Sails Inn is what many would describe as the “quintessential Maine inn”. Located in Kennebunk, the bed and breakfast was previously known as the Elizabeth Rose House. Susanne Lillis purchased the inn in May of 2023. Susanne, who was born and raised in Sonderborg, Denmark, lived in Rangeley, Maine for 19 years. Having spent 25 years in the hospitality industry, she decided to fulfill her lifelong dream of owning her own establishment and purchased this picturesque inn.
She was working with Franklin Savings Bank to secure funding for the purchase, and as things seemed to become complicated, was then introduced to SMFA. Susanne’s financial needs fit perfectly with our SBA 504 Loan program. Once we met with her, things started to come together for securing the financing she needed to purchase the Inn. “There were times when the process became incredibly stressful, especially with the waiting period for loan approval taking several months. However, SMFA was right there with me from the start, and they made the entire process surprisingly easy and efficient. They were on top of everything, and their excellent communication kept all parties informed.”
Thanks to the partnership between SMFA and her bank, Susanne is now the happy innkeeper of the White Sails Inn. Since the purchase, there have been exciting changes to the property, including interior painting and updated décor, new landscaping, an outdoor fire pit, a refreshed patio area with chaise lounges, and more. Effort was made to ensure the inn retained all of its charm, and its cozy coastal Maine vibe.
A two-room suite was also added providing a great option for extended family, unique quarters for two couples traveling together, or for weekend getaways for a small group of friends. Guests enjoy a homemade 3-course breakfast daily, and can dine in the Inn’s Shipwreck Pub.
White Sails Inn is conveniently located for a variety of tourist and traveler interests. Just 4 miles from Kennebunk Beach, 6 miles to Wells Beach, and 10 miles to Ogunquit Beach, and a short drive to Portland, they are close to everything the area has to offer. The Inn is great for couples getaways, family reunions, friends weekends, or small corporate retreats. They also offer a private meeting room with space for up to 12 people.
“Working with SMFA was an absolute pleasure, and I can confidently say that without their support, I’m not sure I would have secured the final amount of money needed for my venture. I wholeheartedly recommend SMFA to any business facing a similar situation. Their background in banking provides them with unique insights into what is required to make this process as smooth as possible. Their exceptional support and dedication was instrumental in making my journey a success, and I am truly grateful for their partnership.”
